You're not freezing. You're making history.
Chicago hit a record low for this date this morning, as temperatures plummeted to minus 16 at O'Hare International Airport at 8 a.m. The previous record was minus 14 set in 1988.
While school closings and benevolent bosses allowed many Chicago residents to stay safely ensconced inside their homes this morning, those who ventured out endured slick roads, shuttered businesses and major mass transit delays.
"It's frustrating, but at the same time I understand," said Rogers Park resident Maud Ward, whose 20 minute train commute to more than a hour and a half this morning. "I get it and it kind of just sucks."
Temperatures at the airport, the official recording station for the city, dropped below zero after midnight and are expected to stay there until late Tuesday afternoon as the region bears the brunt of a polar punch.
"It's been going down about two degrees an hour here in the last couple hours," National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Ratzer said. The weather service has issued a wind chill advisory for northeast Illinois that will be in effect until noon Tuesday.
The high today is expected to range from minus 9 to minus 13 and the low tonight to between minus 12 and minus 16, driven by powerful winds pulling air from the Arctic. Wind chills are expected to be a dangerous minus 30 to minus 50, according to the National Weather Service.
The coldest temperatures on the record books for Chicago is 27 degrees below zero on Jan. 20, 1985. The lowest high is minus 11 set on Jan. 18, 1994 and Dec. 23, 1983.
